Below is more information from the U.S. Department of Transportation on the different levels of EV Chargers:
Level 1 Chargers:
Level 1 Chargers are able to provide a charge through a common residential 120-volt outlet. These chargers can take 20-30 hours or 3 to 5 miles per hour, commonly used for an overnight charge. These chargers usually come standard with the purchase of the electric vehicle.
Level 2 Chargers:
Level 2 chargers are much more efficient, but require an electrician to install a 240-volt circuit. These chargers take 4-6 hours or 20-80 miles per hour for charging. Level 2 chargers are the most common enhancement for residential EV owners and the standard for public locations, businesses, hotels, condos, etc. There are many different brands out there. Choosing the right EV Charger and having it properly installed is extremely important.
Level 3 Chargers:
Level 3 chargers are most commonly used on the commercial / industrial level, but can charge EVs in about 30-40 minutes. Level 3 chargers use Direct Current to charge much faster and require a larger Amp draw. Level 3 chargers are much more expensive than Level 2 chargers.
